The mission of the event is simple, get people, in teams of two, to run up a mountain and then celebrate with some beer. They spice up the run by adding in two random challenges during the course, which help to "level the playing field."
Do super fit people know their geography, or can they get a cookie from their forehead and into their mouth WITHOUT using their hands?!?!
Yep, those were this year's challenges. In earlier years, it's been a math problem and egg balancing.
The event starts at Pale Fire Brewing in downtown Harrisonburg, where registrants check-in and board charter buses destined for Massanutten Resort. VA Momentum's hype-men get the racers pumped and after a patriotic pledge of allegiance, the race begins up a steep grassy ski slope. You go up one slope, across, another, down a portion (a VERY short portion), and then up onto a gravel fire road. Along the way you complete the challenges and if you're like me, question why you're not finished yet. The entire course is only 2.1 miles! But if feels much longer because you're constantly going up steep grades.
At the top there is a leisurely ski lift ride and spectacular view awaiting your arrival.
Once back at the bottom, you hop aboard the buses and head back to Pale Fire for the post race party. :)
So, when you boil it all down, it's a party with a short (but VERY steep) run in the middle of it. So in our eyes, it's PERFECT.
