THE 2015 TRAUMA TROT AND KIDS SAFETY EXPO, HOSTED BY THE SENTARA RMH MEDICAL CENTER EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, MAY 23RD AT PEAK VIEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THE BURTNER CROSS COUNTRY COURSE.
This event features a series of 1K, 5K and 8K cross country races on a beautiful, scenic, challenging, grass cross country course, as well as entertaining and educational displays and demonstrations for the whole family.
Proceeds from the Trauma Trot fund pediatric injury prevention initiatives including education and outreach. Our primary project provides bicycle helmets to area children. This year we plan to begin a new project partnering with local law enforcement agencies to give ice cream coupons to children or families who are "caught" wearing helmets or who have children appropriately secured in child safety seats.
If you are interested in sponsoring the Trauma Trot, providing a display or exhibit for the event or volunteering on race day, please contact our race director at PFNEHER@SENTARA.COM. She would love to hear from you!
Dr. L. Daniel Burtner's Story
Dr. L. Daniel Burtner was a pediatrician in Harrisonburg for nearly 40 years. He graduated from Keezletown High School, Bridgewater College and the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Burtner devoted himself to the children of our area. He established his solo practice in Harrisonburg, Va. and also maintained a second office at his home in order to see patients who became ill during the night. His wife, who had earned a bachelor of science in nursing from MCV, worked as his nurse. He also established Pediatric Associates of Harrisonburg (which we now know as Harrisonburg Pediatrics) and remained that firm’s senior partner until his retirement.
Health and physical fitness were very important to Dr. Burtner. He made jogging a regular practice. He ran a 5K race three months following a hip replacement, and again five months following heart bypass surgery. He also established a practice of promoting health and fitness among area youth. He built a basketball and tennis court for youth and also created a cross country course on his farm. The course is currently used by local middle school, high school and college runners. The cross country course on the Burtner Farm will be the site of our 1K, 5K, 8K Trauma Trot races. His daughter, Brenda is an Emergency Department nurse at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and has been instrumental in the production of the the Trauma Trot series.
Dr. Burtner passed away in the fall of 2013. He will be greatly missed.
