May is Bike Month!

Planning has begun for Bike Month 2014. If you would like to get involved, send an email to

Here are some of the events we’re planning (everything is tentative right now, so be sure to check back often!):

Friday-Saturday, April 25-26: Confident City Cycling Class

  • This class, led by League of American Bicyclists Cycling Instructors, gives bike riders the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic and on the trail. There will be a combination of classroom instruction, parking lot drills, and on-road practice.
  • The class will meet Friday evening from 6 until 10pm and Saturday from 9am till 3pm at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Activities Center at Westover Park. Students must attend both sessions.
  • Registration opens March 31 for Harrisonburg residents and April 1 for everyone. More information here.

Friday, May 2: Costume Bike Parade and Film Festival

  • The fun starts at 5:30 pm at the Turner Pavilion (Farmers Market) with face painting by Larkin Arts. The parade departs at 6:30 pm.
  • After the parade, stay around for the “best costume” award, raffles and food!

Saturday, May 3: DR100

  • Three options to choose from: 30 miles, 68 miles (100 km), and new this year, a family fun ride!
  • When you’re done riding, stay around for lunch, served from 11:30 am till 3:00 pm.
  • Go to for more details.

Sunday, May 4: First Ice Cream Ride

  • Joint us for a short, casual ride for the whole family through the streets of Harrisonburg. Come on out and see what a great place our city is to ride a bike!
  • Meet at 2pm at Kline’s Dairy Bar on E. Wolfe St.
  • After the ride, join us for ice cream at Kline’s!
  • (If you can’t make it today, don’t worry: there’ll be another Ice Cream Ride on the 25th!)

Wednesday, May 7: Bike to School Day

 Saturday, May 10: Commuter Workshop

Sunday, May 11: Women’s Ride

Friday, May 16: Bike to Work Day

  • Join people all over the country and ride your bike to work today! While you’re at it, organize a team of riders from your workplace and participate in a little friendly competition (with prizes!) Go to for more details.
  • Be sure to stop at Court Square on your way to work for a free breakfast, served from 7 till 10 am…
  • …and then on your way home, stop in at Clementine Café between 4:30 and 6:30 and celebrate your accomplishment with other Bike-to-Workers!

Sunday, May 18: Kids’ Bike Rodeo

  • This is a great day to bring the kids out for some fun on bikes! We will have an obstacle course led by a group from the Harrisonburg Police Department, group trail rides, and free bike and helmet adjustments.
  • Time and place TBD.

Friday-Sunday, May 16-18: Bike to Worship Weekend

  • Ride your bike to services this weekend, and encourage those who worship with you to join you!

Sunday, May 25: Ice Cream Ride Number Two!

  • If you missed the first Ice Cream Ride, you have another chance to enjoy a casual, family-friendly ride through the streets of Harrisonburg. Come to think of it, you could join us for both rides!
  • Meet at 2pm at Kline’s Dairy Bar on E. Wolfe St.

National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.
